Just to share.
Sufiah returned to Oxford but her early promise was beginning to dissipate. It was then that she met Jonathan Marshall, a law student.
The two fell in love and married in 2004. Jonathan had already converted to Islam. He was 24 and she was 19. The marriage lasted less than two years.
Speaking yesterday from Saudi Arabia , where he works for a leading firm of City solicitors, Mr Marshall explained: "The reason we split was that I became more observant and Sufiah became less so.
"That took her in the wrong direction, away from the direction in which I wanted to go. The teachings of Islam are fundamental to your everyday life, so when paths diverge in that respect it is a major issue.
"She was confused, really. She didn't know quite what she wanted. She wasn't ready to settle down. Basically, she wanted to be a student.
"She wasn't particularly extrovert. She wasn't a difficult person to live with. We simply had different goals, different ideas of where we wanted to be. There were, to my knowledge, no affairs or anything. I never considered such a thing, simply because of the religious basis of our marriage."
Mr Marshall said there was little contact between Sufiah and her family in her final year at Oxford but some bridges were mended when they attended the couple's Islamic wedding ceremony.
He did not gain the impression during the marriage that Sufiah had been subjected to physical abuse by her father as a child. Psychological abuse was another matter.
Sufiah completed her course but failed to take her final exams, ostensibly because of her health. When Mr Marshall secured a job with one of the 'magic circle' law firms the couple moved to London and then, briefly to Singapore .
It was there that they decided to split. On returning to London , Sufiah was admitted to London University 's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) to read economics.
Despite their split in August 2005, Mr Marshall supported her for eight months before taking up a job with his firm in Saudi Arabia . He has remarried and has two children.
"We agreed that I would assist her for a specific time. I felt a moral obligation to help her out while she was still at university. She wanted to concentrate on university and I agreed she should."
Speaking of the weekend's disclosures, he said: "I am completely shocked. It's very sad, actually. It's very shocking that someone can use themself in such a way. I can't fathom why she would do it - especially someone in her situation. Despite the problems with her family she had many advantages which other people don't have.
"It's a particular shock - her coming from a Muslim background. To see pictures of somebody doing that - somebody I knew very closely - it makes me think how did she get to that stage. Quite frankly she knows well enough what she should and should not do.
"My view is that people can blame childhood to a certain extent, but there also comes a point where you have to take responsibility for your own actions.
"She had her advantages: she had someone willing to support her while she was at university. One newspaper told me that it had offered a substantial amount for her story. Personally, I'd rather sell my story than sell myself."
Mr Marshall has no way of contacting his former wife now - except through the mobile number posted on the website on which she advertised her services.
"I really do hope she manages to get her life back together," he said. "She was obviously very able and it's sad that she is not able to use that talent."
Yet, if Sufiah Yusof is to be believed, she has not yet abandoned her academic career - she told the News of the World's undercover reporter that she was studying for a master's degree in economics and had her exams coming up. Even now, she still has something to prove.

This innovative, and entirely Shari'ah compliant facilities provided the Saudi Binladin Group Limited with a Murabaha (deferred payment) based letter of credit facility and a guarantee issuance facility in an aggregate amount of SAR2,975,000,000 (USD793,206,358). This project also involved the drafting of an Ijara (lease) based facility as an integrated part of the Islamic facilities.
· Lead Associate acting as Saudi counsel for the Mandated Lead Arrangers in respect of the US$855million Murabaha Facility granted to Ibn Zahir (Saudi European Petrochemicals Company).

Ternyata Dewan Rakyat bukan hak kepentingan rakyat

Tindakan Yang Dipertua Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia menolak dalam kamar usul tidak percaya terhadap kepimpinan Perdana Menteri Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, langsung tidak mengambil kira kepentingan rakyat yang perlu disegerakan. -->
Usul tersebut telah difailkan oleh Ketua Pembangkang, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail dan diserahkan kepada Pandikar di pejabat beliau, pada 10 Julai lalu.
Sebaliknya, Pandikar menolak usul tersebut dibawa ke dalam Dewan Rakyat, untuk dibentangkan Wan Azizah yang juga Ahli Parlimen Pematang Pauh, semalam.
Sebagaimana biasa usul di bawah peraturan mesyuarat 18(1) dibaca kira-kira pukul 11.30 pagi iaitu selepas sesi soal jawab selama satu jam setengah. Sidang Parlimen bermula pukul 10 pagi.
Pandikar memberi alasan isu itu telah dibahaskan bulan lalu melalui perbahasan usul yang difailkan oleh Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna, Dato' Shahril Abdul Samad pada 23 Jun lalu. Usul menteri itu umpama usul undi tidak percaya yang dibawa Wan Azizah.
Usul kenaikan harga petroleum dan harga barangan yang dibentangkan secara mengejut oleh kerajaan Barisan Nasional (BN) melalui Shahril itu apabila terdapat tekanan Ahli Parlimen Parti Maju Sabah (SAPP) daripada komponan Barisan Nasional (BN) akan membuat usul tidak percaya kepada Abdullah.
Stategik memintas Abdullah itu bukan sahaja mendapat sokongan 129 undi setuju dan 78 membantah setelah dibuat undi belah bahagian kepada usul terbabit bahkan dipergunakan sebagai hujah oleh Pandikar bagi mematahkan usul yang dibawa Wan Azizah tersebut.
Bagaimanapun sokongan usul tersebut bukan bermakna mewakili keseluruhan suara rakyat bagi kawasan parlimen masing-masing.
Ini kerana ada pendapat mengatakan ia tidak dibuat pungutan suara untuk memastikan wakil rakyat mewakili keputusan majoriti sama ada bersetuju atau tidak dengan kenaikan harga minyak.
Wakil rakyat berstatus BN hendaklah mengenepikan sentimen terhadap kepartian dan kepimpinan mereka kerana mereka perlu membawa suara dan keputusan rakyat ke Parlimen. Dengan cara ini, keputusan terhadap usul tersebut lebih adil kepada rakyat.
Pandikar berhujah berdasarkan kepada usul Shahril menolak usul Wan Azizah bermakna usul Wan Azizah juga memenuhi tiga syarat yang boleh dibahaskan dalam Dewan Rakyat iaitu perkara tertentu, kepentingan orang ramai dan perlu disegerakan.
Usul tersebut sebenarnya amat ditunggu oleh rakyat yang mahu satu perubahan kepimpinan negara setelah Abdullah gagal dengan janji manifestonya dalam pilihan raya umum 8 Mac lalu, iaitu 'Selamat, Aman dan Makmur'.
Rakyat merasa keadaan negara semakin tidak selamat dan aman terutama dalam soal politik apabila kes pembunuhan dan rasuah sering dikait pemimpin berkuasa.
Laporan polis bekas Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim terhadap Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Musa Hasan dan Peguam Negara, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Patail cukup membayangkan bahawa ada sesuatu yang tidak kena kepada mereka yang berkuasa.
Rakyat merasa tidak aman apabila dua akuan sumpah yang mengaitkan pemimpin negara dibuat oleh Balasubramaniam tiba-tiba beliau berada di luar negara.
Keadaan tidak selamat ini menyebabkan rakyat juga mempunyai dua andaian terhadap Bala sama ada beliau diugut bunuh atau senang lenang di atas timbunan wang.
Kepimpinan negara juga dilihat asyik mempertahankan isu peribadi sehingga lupa dalam mengurus dan mentadbir negara untuk mengembalikan kepercayaan pelabur ke negara ini.
Kerajaan juga hilang tumpuan terhadap kepentingan negara apabila masa kepimpinan lebih banyak tertumpu kepada mengatur dan menyusun stategi bagi mengelak serangan politik dalam parti dan juga pembangkang.
Abdullah juga didakwa lebih mementingkan syarikat milik keluarga sehingga sanggup menaikkan harga minyak.
Seruan Abdullah mahu rakyat mengubah cara hidup sebenarnya mempunyai maksud terselindung supaya rakyat menggunakan pengangkutan awam bertujuan memulihkan aliran tunai sebuah syarikat pengangkutan awam di Kuala Lumpur untuk meneruskan pembelian bas baru yang masih tersadai.
Kepimpinan negara juga gagal mengatasi masalah kesukaran rakyat mendapatkan bekalan beras Super Tempatan 15 peratus (ST15) dan gandum harga kawalan kerajaan kerana ia berkait dengan keselamatan pemakanan negara.
Beras ST15 berharga RM1.70 sekilo hanya terdapat dalam bungkusan 10 kilogram dan di pasar raya tertentu. Ia tidak menepati sasaran kepada orang miskin yang hanya berbelanja di kedai runcit dengan kuantiti yang kecil.
Sebagaimana beras ST15 begitu juga gandum seling RM1.35 sekilo sukar didapati. Harga seling hanya sebagai hujah kerajaan mengatakan mereka mempertahankan hak rakyat miskin sebalik tidak mampu memastikan rakyat miskin mendapat kemudahan tersebut.
Akibat daripada tekanan tersebut, rakyat merasakan sudah tidak makmur lagi berada di bawah pemerintahan Abdullah.
Tekanan bermula dengan kenaikan harga minyak dan berterusan kepada barangan keperluan serta barang lain yang turut ikut naik menyebabkan rakyat mula bergantung harap kepada Pakatan Rakyat supaya membuat perubahan untuk meringankan bebanan rakyat.
Apa yang boleh dibuat oleh rakyat sedangkan pilihan raya umum sudah berlalu? Apakah rakyat perlu sabar menunggu lima tahun lagi untuk membuat perubahan hidup mereka?
Terdapat jalan tengah sebelum menunggu tempoh lima tahun iaitu sebagaimana yang dirancang Ketua Pembangkang membawa usul tidak percaya kepada Perdana Menteri ke Dewan Rakyat.
Sebaliknya ia ditolak oleh Pandikar bermakna ia menolak hasrat rakyat terutama golongan miskin yang mahu kepada perubahan dan kerajaan yang mampu membaiki taraf sosial ekonomi mereka.
Bagi rakyat, Pandikar tidak prihatin terhadap nasib mereka. Malah Pandikar tidak melayan permintaan Wan Azizah supaya mempertimbangkan semula keputusan menghalang usul tidak percaya daripada dibahaskan di Dewan rakyat.
Wan Azizah bangun sebelum Dewan Rakyat meneruskan perbahasan Penggal Rancangan Malaysia Ke-9 (RMK-9), meminta Speaker menimbang semula keputusan tersebut.
Sebaliknya, Pandikar berkata usul yang difailkan di bawah Peraturan 18(1) itu menggesa kepada satu resolusi, namun begitu kuasa resolusi tidak terletak di bawah peraturan 18(1).
Bercakap kepada pemberita di luar Dewan Rakyat, Wan Azizah berkata objektif usul itu bukanlah resolusi undi tidak percaya, sebaliknya ia usaha Pakatan Rakyat membawa keluhan dan suara rakyat terhadap kerajaan ke pemerhatian Parlimen.
Usul yang difailkan di bawah Peraturan 18(1) itu berbunyi:
"Bahawa Dewan yang mulia ini mengambil ketetapan tidak percaya terhadap kepimpinan YAB Perdana Menteri Malaysia dan jemaah menteri beliau dalam menjalankan urus tadbir negara disebabkan terhakisnya keyakinan rakyat terhadap integriti kerajaan". - mns _

Tindakan polis melampau, bohongi rakyat dua kali

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 Julai (Hrkh) - Ketua Angkatan Muda KeADILan (AMK), Shamsul Iskandar Mat Akin menyelar tindakan pihak polis dan anggota keselamatan yang menjalankan sekatan jalan raya dengan kawalan yang menyusahkan orang ramai. -->
Menurutnya, pihak polis telah mengadakan kawalan ketat sekitar Pasar Seni atau Central Market sejak pagi tadi sehingga menimbulkan rasa takut dan kurang senang peniaga serta orang ramai yang berkunjung di sana.
"Ini merupakan tindakan intimidasi atau gangguan yang dibuat pihak polis secara melampau terhadap proses perjalanan demokrasi di negara ini," katanya kepada Harakahdaily.
Beliau turut menafikan bahawa wujudnya perancangan bagi mengadakan perhimpunan oleh Pakatan Rakyat khususnya KeADILan dalam usaha menyokong usul tidak percaya ke atas Perdana Menteri di Parlimen.
"Tiada sebarang perancangan mahupun usaha untuk mengadakan perhimpunan mengenai isu terbabit," katanya.
Katanya, ini secara tidak langsung membuktikan pihak polis sengaja mengada-adakan cerita bahawa KeADILan dan parti-parti komponen Pakatan Rakyat menganjurkan perhimpunan.
Bercakap kepada media di pekarangan Pasar Seni, beliau melahirkan kekesalan yang bertindak secara tidak profesional dengan menghalang beliau bercakap dengan pihak pemberita.
"Saya amat kesal dengan tindakan melampau pihak polis bagi menangani hal ini, mereka tidak profesional dan tidak demokratik," tegasnya.
Beliau turut menafikan bahawa wujud usaha mengadakan juga perhimpunan tersebut meskipun kononnya ia gagal diadakan di parlimen pagi tadi.
"Kita mendapat arahan daripada OCPD Dang Wangi, serta notis-notis yang ditampal di sekitar Pasar Seni ini melarang sebarang anjuran perhimpunan di kawasan tersebut," ujarnya.
Bahkan, beliau hanya datang bertiga ke lokasi yang didakwa akan dibuat perhimpunan tersebut.
Sejak pagi tadi, sekitar kawasan Pasar Seni dikawal ketat oleh tidak kurang daripada 100 pegawai polis berpakaian uniform serta lebih 100 anggota berpakaian preman daripada bahagian depan, sisi dan belakang bangunan tersebut.
Beberapa trak polis, FRU, motosikal, van dan kereta peronda berbaris panjang di sepanjang jalan dan sisi pasar seni mengundang tanda tanya orang ramai yang lalu-lalang.
Malah, pihak media juga diminta oleh pihak polis untuk segera meninggalkan lokasi Pasar Seni setelah Shamsul beredar dari tempat kejadian.
Sementara itu, Ketua Pemuda PAS Pusat, salahuddin Ayub pula menempelak tindakan pihak polis yang secara keterlaluan mengadakan sekatan jalan raya di seluruh jalan menuju ke bandaraya Kuala Lumpur.
"Tiada sebarang perhimpunan yang dianjurkan, ini merupakan pembohongan kali kedua oleh pihak tertentu.
"Takkan kita sebagai pimpinan Pakatan Rakyat tidak mengetahui mengenai perancangan untuk melaksanakan perhimpunan ini," ujarnya ketika dihubungi Harakahdaily.
Beliau turut mendakwa apa yang dilakukan pihak polis adalah untuk mengharu-birukan situasi seolah-olah ingin menggambarkan kepada rakyat bahawa sekiranya usul undi tidak percaya diterima di Dewan Rakyat, keadaan akan menjadi tidak stabil.
"Kita kesal dengan kemarahan rakyat dengan tindakan polis yang sengaja mengundang keresahan di hati mereka.
"Apa yang jelas, kerajaan Umno-BN mahu menakut-nakutkan rakyat dalam situasi pelabur telah hilang keyakinan terhadap negara," ujarnya.
Beliau yang juga Ketua Whip Parlimen, turut melahirkan rasa tidak puas hati apabila para pengamal media alternatif tidak dibenarkan membuat liputan di Dewan Rakyat khususnya mengenai usul undi tidak percaya oleh Ketua Pembangkang, Dato' Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. - mks._
